Easter Eggs (Straight from the Hen)
If you found a basket of blue, green and pink eggs , you might think it was Easter time. But some lucky farmers can collect Easter eggs all year round because of a special kind of chicken that lay coloured eggs. The chickens lay eggs in many different shades of blue, green , gold and pink. Each hen always lays the same colour egg. The hen come in many different colours but there is no way to tell by the colour of the hen what colour egg it will lay.
The dyed eggs (Easter eggs) are usually coloured only on the outside . But these eggs are the same colour inside and out. Otherwise they are like ordinary eggs , look the same and taste the same. But some scientists say that these eggs are healthier .
Easter Sunday.
Today on Easter Sunday , children wake up to find that the Easter Bunny has left them baskets of candy. He has also hidden the eggs that they decorated earlier that week. Children hunt for the Eggs all around the house. Some organizations even hold Easter egg hunts and the child who finds the most eggs wins a prize.
The Easter Bunny was originally called the Easter Hare. Hares and rabbits have frequent multiple births, so they became a symbol of fertility. The custom of an Easter egg hunt began because children believed that hares laid eggs in the grass. The Romans believe that “All life comes from an egg.” Christians consider eggs to be “the seed of life” and so they are symbolic of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Why we dye or colour and decorate eggs is not certain.
Egg rolling.
In England children roll eggs down hills on Easter morning .This game is connected to the rolling away of the rock from Jesus Christ’s tomb when He was resurrected. In America there is the Egg rolling event for the children under twelve on the White House lawn. It is sponsored by the wife of the President. Americans also have Easter parades all over the country.
Good Friday.
People used to eat hot cross buns in England on Good Friday . two days before Easter Day. But you can eat them any time you like during the week before Easter. Hot cross buns have spices and dried fruit in them. They are quite sweet and taste delicious if you warm them up. Before the bakers put them in the ovens they mark them with a cross. People usually eat hot cross buns hot with lots of butter on top. Sometimes they are toasted.
Easter Sunday.
Easter Sunday is an important day for the church. People give each other Easter eggs. They do this because the egg means new life. Most of the eggs are chocolate and have coloured paper on them. Sometimes people paint real eggs and give them to their friends as presents.
Easter Monday.
Easter Monday is a Bank Holiday in Britain. The banks are closed of course. And so are the factories , schools and most of the shops. Schools in Britain usually have around 2 weeks holiday at Easter. It’s a popular time of year for them After all, spring is on its way.
