Collaborative learning

by Tarmo Toikkanen — last modified 2011-01-09 02:59 Share

Collaborative learning is based on creating a collaborative study culture - each individual is working towards a common goal. The focus is not on individual success, but completion of the shared task. Collaboration shares features with process-writing or children's play.

A central property is that the originator of ideas or thoughts is difficult to pinpoint. One student gets an idea, elaborates it a bit, and creates a draft. Another student takes the idea and develops it further: "This made me think that..."

The point about collaborative learning is that individuals can exceed their own limits when they get ideas, help and support from each other.

Collaborative learning can happen in small groups or in a computer-supported learning environment.
