A diagnostic exam is administered to the students at the beginning of a course. It allows both the teacher and the students to get a general idea about their thinking on the new concepts. It is also especially valuable to review the diagnostic survey at the end of the course to see how the learners' thinking has changed during the course. This exam can also be used to ask about the expectations the students have for the course, which will allow the teacher to better tune the course. In natural sciences, it is usually good to include a problem solving assignment in the exam. |
