Study Project / Project Learning

Study project / project-based learning is a way of teaching and learning where the study work is done in a project. The method is common among science, art and design teaching but can be used in many other topics as well.

In a study project / project-based learning, there are several stages that are implemented in a certain sequence. The six steps carried out are:

1. Defining the project

  • What will be studied in the project?
  • What are the expected results of the project?
  • What are the stages of the project?
  • What kind of resources – time, space, equipment and people - are needed?
  • What will be the artefacts communicating the results of the preoject?
  • How will the results of the study work be presented?

2. Generating ideas

  • What are the driving questions related to the main topic?
  • How will we get answers to these questions?
  • What do we want to say with our project?

2. Identify Work and planning the project

  • What is already available ? (previous knowledge, existing elements)
  • What has to be done ? (tasks)
  • How will it be done ?
  • Which skills are available in the group ?
  • How to acquire missing resources or skills (learning objectives or research of resource)
  • Planification of tasks (deadlines) ?
  • Assignation to participants

3. Hands-on work to gain the results or products planned

  • Research and study work
  • Design and production of the artefacts

4. Disseminating and communicating the results of the project

  • Presenting the artefacts to each other and to a wider community

5. Evaluating the results of the project

  • What did we learn?
  • What was good and what was bad in the process?
  • How could we do the same project next time better?
