Summary groups

This is a simple technique to summarize a longer course. Instead of the teacher giving his summary, the students are engaged. Here are the steps:

  1. Split the students into groups of 4-6 people.
  2. Each group has 2-5 minutes to come up with one in-depth open question about the topics that the course was about.
  3. Each group presents their question to the group next to them, so each group receives one question formed by another group. The questions are passed in a circle.
  4. Each group now has 30 minutes to formulate a good answer to the question given to them.
  5. Each group will in turn present to the other groups their answer to the question.

This way of summarizing a course will engage the students, really make them consider what they've learnt, and apply that to a challenging question. The presentations in turn will usually give a good overview of all the aspects the course has covered. And it is more interesting than just the teacher talking.
