This article shoould explain wikis as a generic learning tool with references to several services and engines.

WikiSpaces is a service that you can use to create your own wikis. They can be used for example to support a collaborative effort being carried out during a course. If you want your wiki to be private, then there is a cost, but setting up a public wiki is free.

pbwiki basic service is free but if you want premium service, you can pay $10/month.

wetpaint is the best wiki service I could find, far easier to use than the others and free as well (but comes with google ads). In case of educational pages and projects it is possible to ask moderators to remove the adds (Ad-free)
